The 1840 Federal Census of Clarke Co., Southern District of MS, was conducted by Rowland B. CROSBY.  Based on the census, the population of the county then was 2,986.   The microfilm copy of this census can be found on National Archives Publication M704, Roll #213. The actual ledgers contained 80 columns across two pages. The only person by name shown was the Head of the Family. All other members of the family were enumerated by the number of persons in specific age groupings.
