The 1850 Federal Census of Clarke Co., MS was conducted by John W. WHITE from 5 Aug 1850 through 17 Oct 1850. The population had grown to 5,477, almost doubling in 10 years. This census is considered by many genealogists and researchers to be the key census for ancestor hunters since it not only gives the name of the head of household, but for the first time we can now see names and ages of other members of the family/dwelling. The census also provides other data such as sex, occupation, value of real estate, birthplace, if attended school 6 months of the year, if married within the year, read/write ability, and if the person was idiotic/insane. The microfilm copy of this census can be found on National Archives Publication M432, Roll #370.
For this transcription, the following codes were used to show various information about the person:
(sch) - attended school 6 months of the year
(mwy) - married within the year
(crw) - cannot read and write
(idi) - idiotic
The census has been split into 12 files as follows:
I compiled this extraction years ago from my personally owned microfilm copy of the original census record.
