1962 Ford Galaxie 500 (New)
My Second Car

I bought my second car in 1962 in Mobile, AL. The 1955 Olds was traded in on a new Ford Galaxie 500, 2 door hardtop, 352 CID V8 engine, 2 bbl carb, (I think it had a bone shaking 220 HP!), manual transmission (3 speed on the column), bench seats, PS, PB, radio, heater, maroon with white top. I can't remember if it had AC...wouldn't have mattered anyway since the cool thing to do back then was ride around with all windows down (sometimes even in cold weather!), sit kinda low in the seat.

It's a bit ironic on how I happend to buy a new Ford. In 1962, the car many a lad wanted to own was the Chevy Impala SS 2-dr hardtop with either a 327 CID (375 HP) or the king, the 409 CID (380 HP) (all you "oldsters" will remember the Beach Boys smash hit, "409"), 4-speed tranny ("four on the floor"). positraction rear end and other goodies. I was one of those lads. Drove my old 55 Olds down to the Chevy dealer in Prichard, AL and picked out a beautiful red 1962 Impala, 2 dr hardtop, 327 CID engine, and a 4-speed. I had found my dream car! Unfortunately, when the dealer found out my age (I was 21), he thought I may be a security risk, being at draft age, and wouldn't finance the deal. Needless to say, I was devastated (and mad at the same time). Back then, I was a little meek, but 20 years later I would have blown my top! Anyway, I was so ticked off that I drove over to the Ford dealership and found a 1962 Galaxie 500 on the lot. Within an hour or so, I was driving it home. I showed the Chevy dealer, didn't I? Mess with me, will ya! Yeah, right...I'm sure I put a big dent in that month's Chevy sales!
