1970 Chevelle (New)

In the fall of 1969 when the 1970 Chevelles hit the showroom, I again got the new car fever (along with my best friend, whom had also bought a black '68 with same engine package I had). Toward the end of 1969 or early 1970, we took the plunge again! He bought a blue 1970 SS396 with white hood and deck lid stripes; I bought a red one with black stripes and red interior, 396 engine (was actually 401 CID in 1970) with 350 HP; 4 speed, positraction, 2 dr HT. This is the car that I modified later with a Crane 427 cam, solid lifters, steering column mounted Sun Tach, and amp/temp gauges. I used to joke that the driver's side of the dash looked like something akin to an airplane cockpit! The engine mods probably boosted my HP up to around 375 or more. The cam made the engine put out a nice little lope. With twin glasspacks, the deep throat sound coming out the two twin tailpipes (with chrome extensions) was awesome.

I kept this car immaculate inside and out. I will venture to say that I gave it a complete wax job several times a month. I hated to get a speck of dust on it! When I sold it the next year (Carolyn and I married), it was still in perfect shape. I have wished a thousand times I could have found a way to have kept it. It would be a collector's item today (2010).

The below shot was taken in early 1971. I sold the car in the summer of 1971 because my wife to be already had a car and we didn't need two car payments. Carolyn and I were married June 1971.
