The following information was extracted from a microfilm copy of the typed MS Death Certificate Index (I have the film). The index was compiled by the MS Dept of Health years ago. As with any human compilation, there probably are errors (including my extraction). The roll of film from which this data was taken covers the years 1912-1924. The index is arranged alphabetically by last name and all names are included for the years. For example, deaths reported 1912-1924 with surnames beginning with "A", are all together for the 1912-1924 period. The index for this period is not arranged by individual year. To get the Clarke deaths, I had to search through the roll and pick them out. All counties in MS are covered on this index. When using this info, you are encouraged to check possible variations in spelling of a particular surname. I have even noted some where the race was incorrect. The name or initial(s) after the Stillborn or Unnamed deaths are shown as they appear on the index, and refer to the parent's name or initial(s). Race keys are: W=White; C=Colored; B=Black
If you are unable to find the name you are looking for on this index and you feel certain he/she died in Clarke County, MS, there could be several reasons why it is not listed on the index: (1) The name was missed when the index was compiled from the actual Death Certificates by MS Dept of Health (2) The death was recorded under a different name (3) The death was not reported to the MS Dept of Health. There could also be other reasons.
