Inscriptions on tombstones are considered facts and cannot be copyrighted; however, the arrangement and format of those facts can be copyrighted. My son and I spent hundreds of hours walking over 50 cemeteries in Clarke Co., MS (row by row, stone by stone) and trancribing all info appearing on the stones, including the epitaphs. This was tiring work, but we enjoyed it.

With the popularity of Find-A-Grave the last few years, individual listings of cemeteries has seemingly become redundant. I am a firm supporter of Find-A-Grave and use the site almost daily. I am also a firm believer of anyone posting info there (birth/death dates) should not be taking data compiled by someone else and posting it to Find-a-Grave (or anywhere else!), making it appear they did the research. Any data posted there should be from first hand knowledge, i. e. the cemetery has been visited personally by the submitter and info obtained from the headstone. It has become very evident that someone has used the data from some of my cemetery compilations and posted it to Find-A-Grave with no acknowledgment of the source or no credit given to the hard work of the compiler. In some cases, it appears entire cemeteries have been copied. As I stated above, tombstone inscriptions are facts and facts cannot be copyrighted; however, it makes good sense if one uses someone else's work (not just Find-A-Grave, but ANYWHERE), the source of the info should be noted.

In view of the above circumstances, I have found it necessary to remove all my cemetery inscriptions from this website, effective 2 Nov 2010. If anyone out there reads this and says, "Oh geez, I was one of the ones who did that!", think next time before you use someone else's work. It's best to ask permission from the compiler and then give credit for somebody else's work. I have left the links to cemeteries not on my site.
