As we all know, court documents can sometimes provide a wealth of genealogical information. One such group of documents are Chancery Court cases. The following info was taken from the packets on file at the Chancery Clerk's Office, Clarke County Court House. The packet supposedly contains every document that was created in connection with the case. These same records are also recorded in Chancery Court Minute Books, but unfortunately all documents pertaining to the same case are not consecutive, but recorded at different times in the minute book, according to the court term. They all, however, are assigned a case number, which remains the same throughout the minute book. One just has to search each page to find reference to the particular case number, unless there happens to be an index to the book. The advantage of the packets is that all the info is together. Some packets are two inches thick, while others might have only one or two documents in the file.
One important genealogical bit of info contained in these records is divorces. Other info might provide an approximate death date involving an estate (est.) settlement. Below I have extracted packet number, names of parties, and year or years involved ( found it was taking too long to open up each packet and go through each document to get the beginning and ending year...so I don't have the years on all of them). I have arranged this list alphabetically by the first name listed on the packet (the second name is not indexed). The packets are filed in number order at the court house.
