Davis Cemetery is located southeast of Quitman, MS, just off County Road 680. The front gate to the cemetery can be seen from County Road 680, but to get to it, one must go through a gate and across a pasture (private property). I obtained permission from the landowner to get to the cemetery.

This compilation was not done in any particular order. The cemetery is overgrown with trees, bushes, saplings, leaves, etc. It was not easy to move around inside. There are numerous mounds marked only by a large rock or stone. There were also some mounds visible with no marking at all. I tried to find all visible stones with markings, but I may have missed some. If anyone has information about other burials here, please let me know and I will add them to this list.

The abbreviation (FHM) refers to Funeral Home Marker.
Info in red is additions/corrections from Vicki Arrington, 14 Jan 03.

The following info was submitted by Marie Donald, 14-15 Jan 2003:

Libby and Pinkie Davis were buried in the same grave, both dying of measles, I think It was within hours of each other, as the story was handed down to me.

A drawing diagram that I have of the Davis cemetery plots' layout looks like this. "Mary Arrabelle Covington Davis / Pinkie and Libbie, same grave 2 stones/ Clara Davis Harris/ Arrie Delia Lewis Davis/ R.J. Davis (Robert Josiah)/ nearest the gate. "
This is according to Aunt Lucille Davis and/or her mother, (my grandmother)Lura Long Davis from personal knowledge and/or as told to them by Phillip Harris, son of Clara Harris. Martha Hill was the first wife of William Edward Davis, Sr., the son of Mary Arrabelle Covington Davis, and step-son of Arrie Adella (Delia) Lewis Davis. However, both are now deceased. Don't know of anyone in our family who would know anymore.

The following info was submitted 16 Jan 2003 by Terry Reints:

According to Larkin J. Herrington's death certificate, he was born Oct. 10, 1839 in Mississippi. He died Sept. 15, 1917 at De Soto, Clarke Co, MS. He was buried at the "Davis Grave Yard". I also know he served with the 37th Mississippi Inf., so this is the right man.

In September 2002 another member of this group, Rieta, posted some information about the Herrington family that relates to the Davis Cemetery. Larkin J. Herrington had a son named Larkin Daniel (Dan) Herrington about which Rieta wrote, "Larkin Daniel (Dan) Herrington, B.10/18/1887 D.3/10/1935 - Married, 12/21/1906, Lyda Davis, B.5/22/1886 D.7/19/1923. --- Larkin buried in Odd Fellow Cemetery, Quitmam, Ms. Lyda is buried in Davis Cemetery, East of DeSoto, Ms." This would be the Lyda E. Herrington whose tombstone you found.

Rieta also mentioned that Larkin J. Herrington had a daughter named "G. A. Eugenia (Gene) Herrington, -- B.11/3/1873or79 - D.June 25,1947 - Married, 1/17/1897 - Alonzo Battles". This couple had a daughter named Maddie O. Battles about which Rieta wrote, "Maddie O. Battles, B.5/14/1900 - D.1/21/1907 -- Buried in Davis Cemetery, East of DeSoto ".
