Elim Baptist Church Cemetery
Compiled Oct 98 by Bennie and Lance WHITE

From my book, Cemetery Inscriptions of Clarke County, Mississippi, Vol. I

Individual data contained on this page may be used for personal, non-profit purposes; however the entire page or portions thereof may NOT be copied, cut'n'pasted, downloaded, or otherwise duplicated for any reason, including posting elsewhere, without express permission of the compiler above.

Elim Baptist Church and Cemetery are located in Clarke Co., MS; approximately 10 miles East of Quitman, MS. Directions: Take Highway 18 East from US Highway 145 at Quitman for 4.7 miles; turn right on County Road 440 for 5.1 miles; then right on County Road 670 for a few yards; then left on County Road 660. Church and Cemetery are about a tenth of a mile on the left. This cemetery has numerous concrete markers in the ground and according to one member of the church (who happened to come by the day we were copying the inscriptions) several graves no longer have markers at all. On this list, we have shown as many as we could see, but it's likely some were buried in the ground. Also see Old Elam Cemetery.

There is also an "Old Elam (the sign at the cemetery spells it this way) Cemetery" located a few miles from this one. It is the site of the original church and first cemetery. We have located the cemetery and will post the few grave inscriptions soon.

We have shown dates in the DDMMMYYYY format for easier reading. The (DM) note means two separate headstones with surname between resting on a double base. The (DBS) means two separate headstones (with full names) resting on a double base. Row numbers were determined as best as we could using the cemetery layout and may not necessarily agree with any other compilation (if any) or official cemetery records. Abbreviations used here are as follows: BB = Brick Border; CB = Concrete Border; CS = Concrete Slab; DM = Double Marker; DBS = Double Base; FHM = Funeral Home Marker; FM = Foot Marker; FS = Foot Stone; GB = Granite Border; GS = Granite Slab.

We have tried diligently to copy all inscriptions accurately; however, there is no guarantee that this work is 100% correct. If anyone sees an obvious error, please do not hesitate to let us know. All rows were read from left to right.

Newton M. B. SCHRIMPSHIRE above: "I recently had a new tombstone made for Newton
Scrimpshire with the correct date of birth on it, 7 March 1843. The 1850 census, Stewart
County, GA indicates he was born in 1843, not 1838; however the family
Bible had birth date of 1838 as did his obituary. But I think the earlier recorded date
of the census is the correct one. He died in Lauderdale Co., MS.")
