Hiram Meadows, for many years a Clarke County resident, passed away at the home of
his brother, George W. Meadows, Birmingham, AL, 1:30 a. m. Thursday, 21 Dec. Born
26 Feb 1872; 67 years and ten months old. Survived by brother George W. Meadows,
three sisters-in-law, and a number of nieces and nephews. Remains beought back to Clarke
County; funeral services conducted at Montrose Church, Revs. Cliff Johnson and W. L.
Meadows officiating. Interment in Montrose Cemetery next to his father and brother, Green

CCT, Friday, 12 Jan 1940
Josh SCARBROUGH, colored, about 34, killed by the Mobile and Ohio northbound freight
train Monday afternoon. Accident occurred in northern part of Quitman and it is reported that
SCARBROUGH was attempting to board the train and in some way missed his footing. His head
and both arms were severed from his body. Son of Lizzie SCARBROUGH. Funeral services
will be held Sunday.

head-on traffice collision five miles west of Canton last Friday. He died in a Canton
hospital Friday afternoon. He was land agent for Denkman Lumber Co and was 53 years old;
member of Methodist Church and Rotary Club at Canton; moved to Canton four years ago from

Meridian Sanitarium Wednesday, 2:30 AM, of burns; carried to hospital Tuesday, 7:30 PM;
burned in his home, Stonewall, when a can of kerosene was kicked over near a stove; the
kerosene exploded, throwing flames over the child. Funeral held at Assembly of God church
in Stonewall, 10:30, Thursday morning. Survivors (other than parents) - one brother,
Arthur Ray; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H. G. TEW, Stonewall; Mr. and Mrs.
M. E. LONG, Quitman; several aunts and uncles. Rev. Elton Nolan officiated, assisted
