Mrs. Alva McGOWAN LAND, wife of Robert LAND, Melvin, AL, born near Quitman, Clarke Co., MS, 23 Sep 1878; died in Watkins Memorial Hospital, Quitman, 17 Dec 1954. Was daughter of the late Mrs. and Mrs. J. H. McGOWAN. Very early in life, the Methodist Church became the center of her interest and activities. Wa sa member of the UDC, having joined at Ocean Springs, MS, and soon after her marriage became a member of the Butler, AL Chapter and took an active part in all phases of its program until ill health forced her to retire from active participation. On 4 Sep 1907, she became the happy bride of Robert Land, a prominent young businessman of Melvin, AL, and for more than 47 years. she was the inspiration and true companion of her husband. Funeral services conducted in the Methodist Church, Melvin, Sunday, 19 Dec 1954, that being the first funeral service conducted in the church she worked so faithfully to help build, Revs. S. F. Lowery and Br__ Johnson officiating. Interment in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Clarke Co., in the lot she selected as her final resting place.
